heiko is an animated .gif that was realized by Roland
and myself. We were interested in creating a one minute pixel animation using
a canvas size of 64px by 48px. The tiny size of this canvas was of double
interest. Fist, we had to design our protagonists and scenes in a minimalistic
way using at the same time only a few pixels and just three or four colors,
which was quite difficult especially for the animations. The design of the static
elements of the scenery were much more easy. Second, the .gif file format and
the use of an indexed color palette allowed us to create an animation that
could easily be distributed on the www. We also thought about the possibility
to use it as animation for mobile cell phones but due to the tremendous
variety of .gif render engines on the cell phones I did never got it work well.
