armasuisse: The images you can find on this page were made for
a competition in architecture. For my first job in summer 2004 I
worked for AWFF, a small office in Lausanne, Switzerland. Together
with eight other architects, we were mandated for a design study for
hangar where the swiss army maintains and washs their fighters. The
design was quite simple. We proposed a timber structure of eight wooden
frames which spanned over 32 meters, the span width of the hangar.
These frames were enveloped by a double skin that protects the structure
from moistness. The material of the skin was imagined of translucent
polycarbonate panels, which allow a natural illumination of the hangar.
Instead of using crossbeams to brace the timber frame structure we
intended to use prefabricated wood panels. The checker like organization
of these panels damps the expression of the structure and gives the design
a more abstract expression. Unfortunately, we did not win
this competition and ended up only on rank two.
